Water Treatment and Service

Filters or Filtration systems are installed to remove impurities in water. Softeners exchange particles in the water to remove minerals like calcium and magnesium and replacing them with sodium ions.

Anti-Scale Systems are a hi-tech and eco-friendly alternative to softeners that encapsulate minerals so that they pass freely through your plumbing systems without causing mineral build up.

Do you have hard water? Hard water is water that has heavy mineral content, specifically calcium and magnesium. These minerals can wreak havoc on your appliances and fixtures that use water and is also hard on your skin and hair.

It’s not hard to determine that you have hard water. Typically spots will form on your on your dishes and silverware, you will use more soap to “lather” in the shower and there will be build-up on your faucets and shower heads. While these things are annoying, your water employing appliances have to work harder because of buildup which requires more energy, costing you more in bills and greatly reduces the life expectancy of your appliances.

Municipal water is treated primarily with chlorine or chloramines. Water treatment is used because it kills harmful bacteria and viruses living in your water that can cause serious illness or that can even cause fatalities.

The problem with type of water treatment is that disinfectant by-products are created in this process that are also unhealthy when they are ingested. Trihalomethanes THMs and Haloacetic Acids ( HAAs ) which are reported on in every Consumer Confidence Report (aka water quality report) and are known to cause serious health risks including being potentially cancer causing. Trihalomethanes (THMs) can cause problems with your kidney, liver, central nervous system and are known to increase cancer risk. Haloacetic Acids (HAAs), are known to increase cancer risks.

The President’s Cancer Panel released a report in May 2010 that for the first time, produced a government based source noting that the impurities in our water supply may play a role in contracting cancer. To read the report, click here.

By using carbon filtration you can remove or reduce many of these harmful impurities and have cleaner and safer for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and bathing.

Carbon is a substance which has a long been used to absorb impurities and is perhaps the most powerful absorbent known to man. One pound of activated carbon contains the surface area of 125 acres and can absorb literally thousands of different chemicals. Activated carbon is carbon which has a slight electro-positive charge added to it, making it even more able to attract chemicals and impurities. As water passes over the positively charged carbon surface, the negative ions of the contaminants are drawn to the surface of the carbon granules.

Activated carbon filters typically contain either granular activated carbon or powdered block carbon. Although both are effective, carbon block filters generally have a higher contaminant removal ratio. The two most important factors affecting the efficiency of activated carbon filtration are the amount of carbon in the unit and the amount of time the contaminant spends in contact with it. The more carbon, the better quality you will have in your home.

Activated carbon filters generally reduce many VOC’s, pesticides and herbicides, as well as chlorine, benzene, trihalomethane compounds, radium, solvents and hundreds of other man-made chemicals found in tap water.

Municipal water can be sufficiently tested with a basic chlorine/chloramines test and hardness test.

Well water should have comprehensive testing done to test for a wide range of potential concerns, not relevant to municipal water.

Because municipal water is always chemically treated, a whole house carbon filter is a strong must to reduce the harmful impurities in your water.

The Pro Series line of filtration equipment reduces many VOC’s such pesticides and herbicides, as well as chlorine, benzene, trihalomethane compounds, radium, solvents and hundreds of other manmade chemicals that can be found in tap water*. These filters will also remove bad tastes and odors. This makes the whole house filtration systems the most common solution selected among home owners.

In hard water areas you may want help deciding if a traditional softener or anti-scale system best suits your homes needs. Our highly trained Technicians will be able to help.

THMs are known carcinogens. Read your water quality report to see how high they are in your area.

The American Chemical Society estimates that “we could receive from 6 to 100 times more chlorine by breathing the air around showers and baths than we could by drinking water.”

The U.S. Council of Environmental Quality reports that cancer risks for people who drink chlorinated water are 93% higher than people who don’t.

In May 2010, the President’s Cancer Panel recommended filtered tap water to reduce risk of cancer.

There are two principal mechanisms by which activated carbon remove contaminants from water: absorption, and catalytic reduction, a process involving the attraction of negatively-charged contaminant ions to the positively-charged activated carbon. Organic compounds are removed by absorption and residual disinfectants such as chlorine and chloramines are removed by catalytic reduction.

The Pro Series line of equipment works to effectively reduce dirt, rust, VOC’s, chlorine, bad tastes and odors from your water.
